Are there any new Teams in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Season?
There is one, although it not exactly new, not by a long way. If you look at the table above you can see Legacy Motor Club. This was previously known a Petty GMS Motorsports and has undergone a rebranding ( not unusual In NASCAR) for the 2023 season. It is owned by Richard Petty, Jimmie Johnson and Maurice J. Gallagher Jr.
it is one to watch this year as Jimmie Johnson will be trying to score his 84th win 9 the number of his car) and move to joint 4th place on the all time win leaderboard with Daryl Waltrip and Bobby Allison. It was a good start ( this was written before the 2023 Daytona 500) as he was the fastest of all the non charter cars in qualifying.
What are some of the top NASCAR teams?
There have been many successful NASCAR teams in the last 60 plus years and the top three in terms of cup series wins are as follows.
- Petty Enterprises
- Hendricks Motorsports
- Joe Gibbs Racing.
Although when comparing all of NASCAR’s Top level racing Joe Gibbs come out top in terms of wins. We also take a look in more detail at the most successful NASCAR teams here on the site.
How many NASCAR teams are there?
The number of NASCAR teams can vary from year to year. While some seem to have been in the sport since the early days, there are plenty that try their hand for a few seasons and either take a break or leave the top level of the sport.
Teams that are firmly rooted in the cup series, NASCAR’s top level, are teams like Joe Gibbs, Stewart-Haas, Hendricks, Team Penske and Wood Brothers. These teams are able to run a team of up to four cars during the season.
In the 2023 season there are 16 teams competing for the Championship with a range of cars from the full four to a sole race car entry.
What makes a NASCAR team?
Although the driver may be the most recognizable figure in a NASCAR team, unless you are in the 23XI or the Trackhouse team where Michael Jordan and Pitbull are owners and perhaps more famous than even their drivers are!
The team is made up by so many more people than just the owner and the driver. We have an article on the full makeup of a NASCAR team here on the site (on the link) but it includes a driver, crew chief, pit crew, tire changers, jack people, PR and marketing, admin, legal departments, and various other support personnel all working towards the same aim, give their driver the best chance to win in a NASCAR race car.
How do NASCAR teams get funded?
NASCAR teams rely on a variety of funding sources to support their operations, and unsurprisingly those logos all over the drivers car and firesuit all bring in income.
The main ways a NASCAR Team will bring in operational funds include the following. Sponsorship deals, Which we look at in our how much to sponsor a NASCAR article, merchandise sales, prize money from race winnings, and investments from team owners.
Final Thoughts
There are 16 teams competing for the championship in the 2023 NASCAR cup this season. They range from single entry car teams like Wood Brothers Racing all the way to four car teams like Hendricks, Joe Gibbs and Stewart Haas.
Though there is only one winner at the end of it all, so while the teams may have more chance the drivers all start with a hope to be at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the season.
We have to wait till November to find out who that will be!
